Chinese air search operation in southern Indian Ocean begins

Chinese air search has started in the southern Indian Ocean for the missing Malaysian airliner. Two Chinese military aircraft arrived in Perth on Saturday. One of them took off early Monday in the RAAF Base Pearce. It would make a stop at the Perth international airport to refuel before moving out to sea.

The round-trip flight will take eight hours, and the search operation will last for one hour, covering an area of 400 kilometres long and 30 kilometres wide. The area is where satellite imagery earlier spotted objects that could be possible plane debris.
A Chinese commander says weather could hamper the operation.
"What is hard for us to control is the weather on the sea. The flight time is long, and the weather changes very quickly. The waves are very high. It could be very difficult for us to spot something." Chinese Search Team Commander Liu Dianjun said.
