Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe Named New Chairman Of African Union

Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe Named New Chairman Of African Union
Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe took over the post of African Union chairman on Friday, replacing Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.
Mugabe, Africa’s oldest president aged 90, shook hands with Abel Aziz in front of fellow leaders to applause at the AU summit in the Ethiopian capital.
“By electing me to preside over this august body, with full knowledge of the onerous responsibility that lies ahead, I humbly accept your collective decision,” Mugabe said, as he thanked leaders for granting him the position.
Mugabe, a former liberation war hero who is Africa’s third-longest serving leader, is viewed with deep respect by many on the continent.
But he is also subject to travel bans from both the United States and European Union in protest at political violence and intimidation.
Mugabe, a former guerrilla leader who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence in 1980, is accused of crushing opponents to ensure his ZANU-PF party won every election for more than three decades.
Mugabe described his memories of attending the AU’s forerunner in 1963, the Organization of African Unity (OAU), also in Addis Ababa.
“Africa has come a long way since then,” he said.
Last year Mugabe boycotted an EU-Africa Summit in Brussels after he was given a rare invitation — but his wife was still denied a visa.

Justin Bieber Apologises To Fans For Being ‘Arrogant’

Justin Bieber Apologises To Fans For Being ‘Arrogant’
Justin Bieber
I bet you never saw this coming!
From his frequent run-ins with the law to his over-the-top house parties, over-speeding, DUI charges, Justin Bieber has earned himself quite a bad-boy reputation that has only continued to build.
He posted a video online telling his fans that he is really sorry for his recent “arrogant” behaviour, that he was covering up how he was “truly feeling inside”.
In the video posted on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 the 20-year old pop singer said:
“Today, I was on Ellen and it was a lot of fun. She’s amazing, it was her birthday, but I was really nervous. I think I was nervous because I was afraid of what people are thinking about me right now.
“It’s been a minute since I’ve been in a public appearance, and I didn’t want to come off arrogant or conceited or basically how I’ve been acting the past year and a half.
He added: “I’m not who I was pretending to be. Why I say I was ‘pretending’ is often we pretend to be something we’re not as a cover-up of what we are truly feeling inside.
“And there were a lot of feelings going on in there. Just being young and growing up in this business is hard. Just growing up in general is hard.”
Just wondering, could this apology have anything to do with a certain Selena Gomez not wanting him back?

Man with fake gun disrupts Dutch broadcaster NOS

Scene outside NOS studios. Hilversum. 29 Jan 2015
Staff were evacuated from the studios while armed police searched the buildings
A man wielding a fake gun has been arrested in a studio of Dutch news broadcaster NOS, causing the main evening bulletins to be cancelled.
Staff were evacuated from the building in the Media Park in the city of Hilversum.
The man, smartly dressed and carrying what appeared to be a long pistol, paced around a studio, reportedly demanding airtime.
Armed police then stormed into the studio and overpowered him.
Prosecutors later said that the man, aged 19 and from the town of Pijnacker near The Hague, was in police custody.
He is being held on suspicion of making a threat, weapons possession and taking a hostage, officials added.
Police combed the building, declaring it safe shortly after 22:00 (21:00 GMT).
Justice and Safety Minister Ivo Opstelten said it appeared that the man had been acting on his own.
During the disruption to the NOS news programme, the channel broadcast a message reading: "In connection with circumstances, no broadcast is available at this time."
The man's motive was unclear. Dutch media reported that he was believed to be a student at a technical university and had recently lost his parents.
The NOS footage shows him saying: "The things that are going to be said [pause] - those are very large world affairs. We were hired by the security service."
A threatening letter the man allegedly gave to staff, warning of bomb and cyber attacks if he was prevented from going on air, has been published on the NOS website (in Dutch).
A reporter who spoke to him said he had claimed to be from a "hackers' collective", AP news agency says.
Studio arrest
When the channel came back on the air, it broadcast video of the man wandering about a studio.
According to NOS director Jan de Jong, he had wanted to go to the main evening news studio but instead a guard took him to a studio where daytime bulletins are broadcast.
Dressed in a black suit, white shirt and black tie, and carrying what appeared to be a long black pistol, he can be seen on the video walking around in the studio, which appears to be empty.

Boko Haram crisis: Chad 'captures Nigerian town from militants'

Soldiers of the Chadian army at the border between Nigeria and Cameroon - January 2015
Earlier this month, Chadian soldiers deployed to Cameroon's border with Nigeria
Chad's army has driven Boko Haram militants out of Malumfatori town in north-eastern Nigeria, a senior official from Niger has told the BBC.
The reported capture of the town, which lies near the borders of Chad and Niger, follows two days of fighting.
Both ground and air forces are reported to have been used in the assault.
Niger officials said Chadian ground forces moved into the town after crossing Lake Chad. It is not known if the operation was approved by Nigeria.
Boko Haram insurgents have carried out a number of cross-border attacks on Nigeria's neighbours in recent months, attacking villages and military bases.
The Islamist group has seized dozens of people and taken them back to north-east Nigeria, where it controls a swathe of territory.
Action plan
The Nigerian authorities say they are doing all they can to tackle the militants but neighbours, including Niger and Cameroon, have said more must be done.
Chad has already sent troops to Cameroon to help it counter Boko Haram incursions and last week Nigeria said the Chadian army would be fighting on its territory.
However, it was not immediately clear if the authorities in Abuja had prior knowledge of, or any role in, the operation in Malumfatori.
People who fled the area told the BBC they had seen military planes bombing the town, which is on the shores of Lake Chad.
Some of those who left the town during the fighting are reported to have crossed into Niger.
Meanwhile, reports from the area say fighting has now spread to a nearby town, Abadam.
Nigerian officials have made little public comment. They said they were investigating the reports of fighting in the north-east.
Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka told the BBC that Nigeria "has to redefine its fault lines in fighting" Boko Haram.
He said tackling the group required not just military action but also "improving the capacity of the Nigerian state" in areas such as the judiciary, prison system and law enforcement agencies.

Egypt military targeted in deadly Sinai attacks

Egyptian armoured vehicles head along a road in El-Arish on way to the Rafah. 13 August 2011
Egypt's military has long tried to quell violence in the restive northern Sinai region

At least 26 people, mostly soldiers, have been killed in a series of attacks by Islamist militants in the north of Egypt's Sinai peninsula.
A car bomb and rockets hit military targets in provincial capital El-Arish.
Other attacks took place in the town of Sheik Zuwayid and in Rafah, near Gaza.
Militant group Sinai Province, which changed its named from Ansar Beit al-Maqdis when it pledged allegiance to Islamic State, said it carried out the "extensive, simultaneous" attacks.
The US condemned the attacks, saying it remained "steadfast in its support of the Egyptian government's efforts to combat the threat of terrorism".
The insurgents have intensified attacks since Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was ousted in 2013.
Correspondents say Thursday's attacks were some of the worst anti-government violence in Egypt for months.
Tensions have also been raised across Egypt this week amid protests marking the anniversary of the 2011 uprising that ousted then-leader Hosni Mubarak.
Security officials said rockets were first fired at police offices, a military base and a military hotel in El-Arish before a car bomb exploded at the rear gate of the military base. Several army checkpoints in the city were also targeted.
Newspaper al-Ahram said its El-Arish office - which is opposite the hotel and base - had been completely destroyed.
Four soldiers were wounded in an attack at a checkpoint outside El-Arish and an army major was later shot dead at a checkpoint in Rafah, medical and security sources said.
More than 50 people were wounded in Thursday's attacks.
North Sinai has been under a state of emergency and a curfew since October when an attack on a checkpoint killed dozens of soldiers.
The army has launched major operations to try to quell violence in the region, but has so far failed.
Sinai Province has become the biggest threat, staging many attacks on security targets.

Declaring the missing plane an "accident" should help unlock compensation payments for bereaved relatives
The Malaysian government has officially declared the disappearance of Malaysian Airline flight MH370 an accident and has said that there were no survivors.
No trace of the Beijing-bound aircraft has been found since it disappeared on 8 March 2014.
Officials said that the recovery operation is ongoing but that the 239 people onboard are now presumed dead.
The plane's whereabouts are still unknown despite a massive international search in the southern Indian Ocean.
The declaration on Thursday should allow compensation payments to relatives of the victims.
Malaysian officials added that the recovery of the missing aircraft remained a priority and that they have pursued "every credible lead".
Four vessels are currently searching the sea floor with specialised sonar technology in a remote stretch of ocean where the plane is believed to have ended its flight.

Bird flu now in 11 states —FG

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina

The Federal Government on Wednesday announced that the avian influenza virus, also known as bird flu, is now present in 11 states of the federation.

The government confirmed the presence of the virus in four other states apart from the seven states earlier reported on January 22, 2015. The seven states earlier reported were Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Delta, Rivers, Edo and Plateau.

At a meeting with commissioners of agriculture from the 36 states of the federation, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, listed the additional states where the flu had spread to as Oyo, Jigawa, Gombe and Imo.

The minister said the total number of birds exposed had risen to 232,385 and that 51,444 mortalities had been recorded.

He said Kano had the highest exposure rate of birds. He put the number of birds exposed in the state at 136,905 with 17,987 mortality level, while Lagos State had 38,845 birds exposed with 4,732 mortality level.

Adesina also announced a compensation of N145.14m to 39 farmers in the 11 affected states where de-population of the birds had been carried out by the Federal Government.

“The 11 states are Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Plateau, Gombe, Imo, Oyo and Jigawa,” he said.

According to the minister, the compensation is to ensure that farmers do not lose their businesses as a result of the devastation by the virus.
He said, “We will do everything to ensure that we protect our poultry industry from this particular situation. So, I want to announce here that effective from today, the compensation of a total amount of N145.145m will be paid to 39 affected farmers across the 11 states.

“In all this, the entire N145.145m will be paid out to the farmers and we have the list of all the farms. We have actually collected all the information and this amount will cover the farms where we have done de-population.

“In all these farms, we have done a de-population of 100,100 birds in which there had been a total exposure of 144,589 birds. So we have the farms that have been de-populated. I say 100,100 birds and some of these farms even before we started our de-population had some mortality of about 44,489. This is a very decisive measure that we are taking to make sure that those affected farms do not go under.”

Gunmen kill seven, injure 14 in Kaduna

Fulani herdsmen

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen opened fire on a crowd of people at Yangal village in Zango-Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing seven on the spot and injuring 12 others.

The village was thrown into mourning on Tuesday night, as the campaign train of Governor Mukhtar Yero reached in the southern part of the state.
Among the seven persons killed was an 87-year-old woman, simply identified as Mama Hauwa Bello.

The acting Chairman of Zango-Kataf Local Government Area, Mr. Jonathan Asake, who confirmed the incident, told newsmen that he got a distress call at about 12am on Wednesday that some armed Fulani men attacked a crowd of people in the Yangal village.

Asake, also a former member of the House of Representatives, said when he got to the scene of the incident, he assisted in evacuating five corpses and 12 injured persons to the St. Louis Hospital, Zonkwa, about 15 kilometres from Yangal village.

He said it was unfortunate that the attack came when the governor’s campaign train was slated to arrive the area on Thursday.

He said that no arrest was made. According to him, before soldiers arrived the scene of the attack, the gunmen had fled.
Asake said, “I reached Yangal village this morning and met scores of angry, sticks-and knife-wielding youths who wanted to descend on me for coming late. I was told that an old woman had passed on and had been buried.

“According to the villagers, two Fulani men were sighted around 9pm on Tuesday night around the venue of the celebration. One with a gun and the other had nothing on him. Not suspecting anything, the group went on with their cerebration.

“Then the armed man opened fire on the crowd with his AK 47 rifle. He killed five people on the spot and two later died in the hospital. I saw the corpses and those 12 that were injured. We evacuated them to the St. Luis Hospital. I left the hospital around 5am this morning. Of those injured, nine were critically hit, and we have taken them to a more equipped hospital in Jos, Plateau State.

“By the time soldiers arrived the village, the two men had fled and the village was in confusion.

“This is calculated either to frustrate the governorship campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party or it was a diversion to steal cows. Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero is expected to arrive Zango Kataf, tomorrow (today) to continue with his campaign tour, and we know how desperate the opposition are to unseat our government by all means.”

Mali's MNLA Tuareg rebels hit by suicide bombers

An MNLA fighter in Kidal, northern Mali, on 27 July 2013
Tuareg rebels have been in conflict with the government since independence
Suicide bombers and armed attackers have killed about a dozen people in an assault on rebel positions in northern Mali, security sources have said.
This is the first suicide bombing blamed on the pro-government Gatia militia fighting Tuareg rebels.
However, it may have been infiltrated by militant Islamists who joined the attack, correspondents say.
Northern Mali has been hit by conflict between government forces, Tuareg separatists and militant Islamists.
French-led troops beat back al-Qaeda-linked groups who had seized control of most of the region in 2012 with the backing of the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), the main rebel group campaigning for the rights of ethnic Tuaregs.
'Very volatile'
The MNLA and the al-Qaeda-linked groups later fell-out, and animosity between them now runs strong, correspondents say.
The UN has a 9,000-strong force trying to restore stability in Mali.
Correspondents say there are strong suspicions that the government is increasingly relying on militia groups such as Gatia to strengthen its position against the MNLA in the north.
A UN source said that two bombers blew themselves up in the attack near Tabankort town while a third was killed before he could detonate himself.
"Gatia fighters, accompanied by suicide bombers, attacked a rebel Tuareg and anti-government Arab position in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday near the town of Tabankort. There were a dozen deaths in total," a Western military source said.
"The situation is very volatile, and it is essential to calm the situation," added the source.
Details around the attack are still unclear.
However, only al-Qaeda-linked groups have up to now carried out suicide bombings in Mali, and it is likely that they have infiltrated Gatia.
On Tuesday, three people were killed during clashes between protesters and UN troops in Tabankort, a stronghold of Gatia.

Ebola outbreak: Virus mutating, scientists warn

Ebola virus research
Hundreds of blood samples are being analysed to keep track of the virus
Scientists tracking the Ebola outbreak in Guinea say the virus has mutated.
Researchers at the Institut Pasteur in France, which first identified the outbreak last March, are investigating whether it could have become more contagious.
More than 22,000 people have been infected with Ebola and 8,795 have died in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
Scientists are starting to analyse hundreds of blood samples from Ebola patients in Guinea.
They are tracking how the virus is changing and trying to establish whether it's able to jump more easily from person to person
"We know the virus is changing quite a lot," said human geneticist Dr Anavaj Sakuntabhai.
"That's important for diagnosing (new cases) and for treatment. We need to know how the virus (is changing) to keep up with our enemy."
It's not unusual for viruses to change over a period time. Ebola is an RNA virus - like HIV and influenza - which have a high rate of mutation. That makes the virus more able to adapt and raises the potential for it to become more contagious.
"We've now seen several cases that don't have any symptoms at all, asymptomatic cases," said Anavaj Sakuntabhai.
"These people may be the people who can spread the virus better, but we still don't know that yet. A virus can change itself to less deadly, but more contagious and that's something we are afraid of."
But Professor Jonathan Ball, a virologist at the University of Nottingham, says it's still unclear whether more people are actually not showing symptoms in this outbreak compared with previous ones.
"We know asymptomatic infections occur… but whether we are seeing more of it in the current outbreak is difficult to ascertain," he said.
"It could simply be a numbers game, that the more infection there is out in the wider population, then obviously the more asymptomatic infections we are going to see."
Another common concern is that while the virus has more time and more "hosts" to develop in, Ebola could mutate and eventually become airborne.
There is no evidence to suggest that is happening, however. The virus is still only passed through direct contact with infected people's body fluids.
"At the moment, not enough has been done in terms of the evolution of the virus both geographically and in the human body, so we have to learn more. But something has shown that there are mutations," said Institut Pasteur virologist Noel Tordo.
"For the moment the way of transmission is still the same. You just have to avoid contact (with a sick person)"
"But as a scientist you can't predict it won't change. Maybe it will."

Sydney siege inquest: Police gunfire killed hostage Katrina Dawson

Police at scene of siege
The police entered the cafe after one of the hostages was shot dead, the inquest heard
The start of an inquest into the Sydney cafe siege has heard that hostage Katrina Dawson was killed by fragments from a police bullet or bullets.
The inquest heard that another hostage, Tori Johnson, was killed by a bullet to the head from gunman Man Haron Monis.
That prompted police to raid the Lindt Chocolate Cafe, ending the siege but leaving Ms Dawson and Monis dead.
The inquest is seeking to establish exactly how the three died and whether their deaths could have been avoided.
The hearing will also examine whether it was appropriate to treat the siege as a terrorist event and whether the crisis could have been managed better.
Monis took 18 people hostage at the cafe in Martin Place in Sydney's business district on 15 December, leading to a massive police operation and the shutdown of a large part of the city centre.
At the opening of the coronial inquest in Sydney, Jeremy Gormly, the lawyer assisting the state coroner, said Ms Dawson was "struck by six fragments of a police bullet or bullets which ricocheted from hard surfaces into her body".
"I will not detail the damage done to Ms Dawson other than to say that one fragment struck a major blood vessel. She lost consciousness quickly and died shortly afterwards."
Australian media reports earlier this month had indicated that Ms Dawson, a 38-year-old barrister and mother of three young children, had died after being hit in the heart and shoulder by fragments from a police bullet.
Bomb claim
The inquest heard that Monis entered the cafe on the morning of 15 December with a sawn-off shotgun hidden in a plastic bag.
He ordered chocolate cake and tea, and asked to speak to the manager, Mr Johnson. After ordering Mr Johnson to lock the cafe, he announced: "This is an attack. I have a bomb."
Later that morning, Monis ordered Mr Johnson to phone Australia's emergency number. He ordered the cafe manager to say that Australia was under attack from Islamic State militants.
Mr Johnson was also ordered to say that Monis had planted radio-controlled bombs around the busy Sydney tourist precinct, Circular Quay, and Martin Place - none of which was true.
A number of hostages managed to escape as the siege went on, then at 02:00 local time on 16 December, special police stormed the cafe after a police marksman saw Monis shoot the kneeling Mr Johnson in the back of the head.

This report comes as a shock. The Kardashian’s are yet to make a statement on this.

Boy, 17, Stabs Elder Brother To Death During Heated Argument
File
A man identified as Mohammed Abubakar had been stabbed to death by his 17-year-old younger brother following a heated argument over a stolen mobile phone.
Abubakar who was said to be an expert in phone repairs had accused his younger brother of stealing a phone that belonged to one of his clients.
It was gathered that the suspect had been caught a couple of times in possession of stolen phones.
The suspect disappeared into thin air after the incident which happened on Friday, January 23, 2015 at Zone 5 in Dutse, Bwari Area Council of the Abuja.
Some neighbours of the victim who narrated the incident Abubakar had asked his younger brother if he had any knowledge of where the phone was.
The question infuriated him and prompted him to immediately stormed the kitchen where he eventually brought the knife with which he stabbed the deceased who fell down to the floor in the process.
Abubakar’s younger brother abandoned him in the pool of his own blood and took to his heels after committing the abominable act.
Abubakar was however rushed to a nearby hospital but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.

Apple posts the biggest quarterly profit in history

Preparations for the opening of an Apple store in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province

US technology giant Apple has reported the biggest quarterly profit ever made by a public company.
Apple reported a new profit of $18bn (£11.8bn) in its fiscal first quarter, which tops the $15.9bn made by ExxonMobil in the second quarter of 2012, according to Standard and Poor's.
Record sales of iPhones were behind the surge in profits.
Apple sold 74.5 million iPhones in the three months to 27 December - well ahead of most analysts' expectations.
In a conference call with financial analysts Apple's chief executive Tim Cook said that demand for phones was "staggering".
However, sales of the iPad continued to disappoint, falling by 22% in 2014 from a year earlier.
The demand for Apple's larger iPhone 6 Plus model appeared to help boost profits and increase the iPhone's gross profit margin - or how much Apple makes per product - by 2% to 39.9%.
However, Apple did not give a breakdown of sales for the iPhone 6 and other models.
Apple shares rose more than 5% in trading after the US markets had closed.
Buster Hein, who edits the "Cult of Mac" website, said that iPhone sales had surpassed expectations.
"Oh my gosh, it's unbelievable," he said. "I mean, a lot of us were expecting good iPhone sales during the holidays, but I don't think anybody really thought Apple was going to blow past 70 million units sold," he said.
"Apple became the number one smartphone company in China in the last quarter, which was just huge for them," he added.
Apple's impressive results represent a significant shift towards the massive untapped potential of China.
With a strong line-up of devices entering the final quarter, it was able to reap the fruits of its deal with the world's biggest mobile network, China Mobile.
However, the success of its latest big-screen iPhones may have contributed to further cannibalising sales of the iPad.
The once unstoppable tablet is being further squeezed both by a resurgence in laptop sales, as well as by competition - both in an increasingly saturated US market and in emerging markets by lower-priced, rival machines.
All eyes now are on the Apple Watch - but with a relatively high base price it is not clear whether it will be able to woo more than the Apple faithful.
The iPhone had "transformed the mobile phone industry".
"Others have a bigger share of the market - Samsung, for instance, actually sells more phones than Apple - but Apple makes just an extraordinary amount of money from this one phone.
"A lot of this, at the moment, is about China, where this brand has got extraordinary cachet. They [Apple] sold more phones in China in the last quarter than they have in the United States."
