police

A 57-year-old Vice-Principal of St. Mary Girls College, Ikole Ekiti, in Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Ajayi, has been arrested by the police for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old pupil of the school inside his office.

The bubble burst for the vice-principal on Tuesday, March 18, when the pupil had gone into his office but did not come out as quickly as expected, thereby, fuelling suspicion among the teachers that all was not well.

One of the teachers, who reported the case to the police, was said to have moved closer to the door leading to Mr. Ajayi’s office to open it but discovered that it had been locked from inside.
She was said to have knocked on the door frantically, which made the pupil and the suspect to allegedly quickly stop what they were busy doing inside.

However, what would eventually give a hint of what transpired inside the office behind closed doors was the demeanour of the VP and the pupil, forcing one of the teachers to report the case to the police.

Oklahoma stops execution after botching drug delivery; inmate dies

A vein on an Oklahoma inmate "exploded" in the middle of his execution Tuesday, prompting authorities to abruptly halt the process and call off another execution later in the day as they try to figure out what went wrong.

The inmate, Clayton Lockett, died 43 minutes after the first injection was administered -- according to reporter Courtney Francisco of CNN affiliate KFOR who witnessed the ordeal -- of an apparent heart attack, Oklahoma Department of Corrections Director Robert Patton said.

That first drug, midazolam, is supposed to render a person unconscious. Seven minutes later, Lockett was still conscious. About 16 minutes in, after his mouth and then his head moved, he seemingly tried to get up and tried to talk, saying "man" aloud, according to the KFOR account.
Other reporters – including Cary Aspinwall of thr Tulsa World newspaper -- similarly claimed that Lockett was "still alive," having lifted his head while prison officials lowered the blinds at that time so that onlookers couldn't see what was going on.

Dean Sanderford, Lockett's attorney, said that he saw his client's body start "to twitch (and) he mumbled something." Then "the convulsing got worse, it looked like his whole upper body was trying to lift off the gurney."

Yet the office of Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin issued a statement indicating "execution officials said Lockett remained unconscious after the lethal injection drugs were administered."

In his own confessional statement, Ogbonna Paul Obioma said: “My friend came to me with the drugs that I should assist in looking for a buyer. I decided to partner with him because he promised to reward me handsomely. My intention was to make quick money.”

A 17-year-old student allegedly brought three loaded guns, including an AK-47, and a knife to his Texas school Monday morning.

James Madison High School in San Antonio, Texas, was placed on lockdown until the unidentified student, who also had additional ammunition in his backpack, was taken into custody. No injuries were reported at the school of over 3,200 students, according to The Associated Press.

When they went to his school, they found their son on campus and then sat down with administrators, at which point they checked his backpack and discovered the ammo and two of the three guns. A third gun was found in a bathroom trash can, the San Antonio Express-News reports.

North East Independent School District spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor said it is unclear exactly what the student planned to do with the weapons.

“The student had said that he planned making some demands over the announcements later today at Madison High School,” she told local outlet KSAT Monday. ”He didn’t say specifically what those demands were, but he did say if those demands were not met, he had planned on committing violence.”

Monday’s incident comes days after workers at a nearby school district received an anonymous threat via email that said a mass shooting would take plac

Zanna, who represents Borno North in the Upper Chamber, while claiming that he was privy to information about the movement of the insurgents when they were abducted, told security agents that contrary to their belief that the abducted girls were in Sambisa forest with their abductors, they have since been split and ferried through Lake Chad to neighboring countries among which he said were Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

Joint air search ends for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

After seven weeks of an intense but fruitless search, the international air effort to find Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is over. Some ships will, however, stay on the Indian Ocean to gather any debris that might surface.

More than 600 military personnel from at least seven countries solemnly posed in front of their planes Tuesday for a commemorative photo. Some traded military patches and mulled over their disappointment in not finding the Boeing 777.

Most of the air crews will leave the Royal Australian Air Force Base Pearce, near Perth, over the next few days.

The likelihood of finding any debris on the ocean's surface is "highly unlikely," Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Monday. By now, most of the debris is probably waterlogged and has likely sunk, he said.

"I regret to say that thus far none of our efforts in the air, on the surface or under sea, have found any wreckage," Abbott said.

So officials are moving on to the next phase: a more intense underwater search that will use private contractors and could cost about $56 million.

South Korean ferry rescuers: So many lives could have been saved

When they arrived on the scene, Captain Moon Ye-shik expected to see hundreds of passengers in the water. But all he saw were containers.

"The ship was listing (badly), 30 to 40 degrees," he recalls. "It was in such a bad condition, anyone would assume evacuation was well underway."

The Doola Ace was the first vessel to reach the Sewol, the ill-fated South Korean ferry that first started to sink in the early hours of April 16. Upon arriving at the scene just minutes after receiving a distress call, it didn't take Moon and his crew long to react.

First responders
Around 9:15 am, twenty minutes after the first SOS, Moon and his men were 200 meters from the Sewol, on deck ready to deploy life rafts and life rings.

But despite the alarming angle that the ferry had already attained, there were few signs that a full-fledged evacuation was underway.

What they didn't know was the passengers, including the 325 students from Danwon High School on a field trip, had been told by the ferry's crew to stay put. While the ferry continued its inexorable descent into the cold waters of the Yellow Sea, those on board trusted in the orders of their crew.
"Please do not move from your location," the ferry's loudspeakers, which swiftly began taking on water after running into trouble, barked at those on board. "Absolutely do not move."

Northern Delegates To Confab Welcome Intervention By US, UK

Northern delegates to the ongoing National Conference have welcomed the intervention of the United States and the United Kingdom in the move to rescue the remaining school girls abducted from their school in Chibok, Borno State.

They slammed the federal and state authorities for their lackadaisical attitude towards salvaging the security situation in the country.

The Northern delegates said that the news of the agreement between the president and governors to join forces to defeat the insurgency came to them as a surprise.

In a statement issued by their spokesman, Mr. Anthony AZ Sanni, the delegates nevertheless called on the Boko Haram Islamic insurgents to release the girls, saying it was irrational to hold women or girls as victims in any conflict.

Women all over the country will on Wednesday stage a one-million-women protest march in Abuja to press for the release of the girls abducted by suspected Boko Haram gunmen at Government Secondary School, Chibok.

Prof. Hauwa Abdu Biu disclosed this, yesterday, during an emergency meeting convened by the First Lady of Borno State, Hajiya Nana Kashim Shettima on the way forward for the release of the school girls.
She spoke last week on behalf of coalitions of Borno women during which they called for the release of the school girls and offered to go to the Sambisa Forest in search of the girls.

Prof Biu said that the one million march tagged “Free our girls” will involve women all over the country and called for the mobilization of Borno women to Abuja for the rally.

“The last time, we were in black but this time around the colour for the Abuja rally is red; so we should all be prepared and mobilize ourselves for the rally”, she added.

UPDATE: New Search Phase For Missing Malaysian Plane To Include Private Contractors, May Cost $60 Million

The search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane will be entering a new phase that will use private contractors and may cost about $60 million, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Monday.
“I regret to say that thus far none of our efforts in the air, on the surface or under sea, have found any wreckage,” he said.
The new phase will focus on searching the ocean floor over a much larger area — 60,000 square kilometers, a process that will take about six to eight months.
“We do not want this crippling cloud of uncertainty to hang over this family and the wider traveling public,” he said.
It is “highly unlikely” that any debris will be found on the ocean surface, Abbott said. By this time, most of the debris will have become waterlogged and will have submerged, he said. As such, authorities will be suspending aerial searches.

Abducted School Girls: Nigerian Military Surrounds Location, Arrests Gang Leader

The military has tracked down and surrounded the location, where over 200 schoolgirls who were abducted two weeks ago from Government Secondary School, Chibok, are being held captive, while exploring various options, including intense negotiations by locals and the Borno State Government to secure their release.
Disclosing this yesterday, security sources said the military has already identified the various camps in which the girls are being held, but is being cautious about executing a full onslaught against their captors, in order to avoid collateral damage.
Giving THISDAY a status report on efforts to rescue the girls, he said: “The operation is being strategically carried in a very covert manner because the terrorists will not hesitate to use any of the girls as human shields or even kill them in the event of an attack.
“Another thing you must consider is that apart from being a large expanse of land area, the Sambisa forest also has many clusters of villages and settlements that can suffer from the collateral damage, should an all-out bombardment be carried out.

South Korea ferry disaster: Fisherman still haunted by passengers' screams

Fisherman Kim Hyun-ho finds no peace when he lies down at night. The hundreds of dead or missing passengers from the Sewol ferry disaster haunt his sleep.

Their screams ring in his head. He has vivid memories of his rush to save them in his modest fishing boat off South Korea's coast 10 days ago.

Kim thinks he may have pulled 25 people from the frigid waters of the Yellow Sea, said Saturday. But the man from a nearby tiny island of just 100 people feels no pride, only torment.
"
It was hell. Agonizing. There were a lot of people and not enough boats, people in the water yelling for help. The ferry was sinking fast," he said.

He watched people trapped inside go under with the vessel yards in front of him. Then he heard on television how many people were sealed up in the ship

So far, rescuers have retrieved 187 bodies. An additional 115 people remain missing.

The father of two grown children is heartbroken for the hundreds of parents who have lost theirs, those he could not save.

He's trying to fish again, but he's a changed man, he says.

Federal Court Grants Stay Of Execution Over Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge Toll

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday granted a motion for stay of execution of its judgment which declared the collection of toll on the newly constructed Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge unlawful.

Justice Saliu Saidu ordered a stay of execution following a motion filed by the Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr Ade Ipaye.

Ipaye had sought a stay of execution of the judgment pending the determination of an appeal at the Court of Appeal.

A human rights activist, Mr Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, had filed a suit on Nov. 26, 2012 against the Lagos State Government, challenging its collection of toll on the bridge.
