Ebola crisis: Red Cross says Guinea aid workers face attacks

Guinean Red Cross workers carry the corpse of an Ebola victim in Patrice near Macenta on November 21, 2014
The ICRC said attacks on its volunteers were "unacceptable"
Aid workers fighting Ebola in Guinea are being subjected to an average of 10 attacks every month, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says.
The latest assault happened on Sunday when two Guinean Red Cross volunteers were beaten by locals while trying to conduct a safe burial, the group said.
Last year eight aid workers were hacked to death in Guinea.
It came as the US said it would pull out troops stationed in Liberia to help contain the virus.
US President Barack Obama announced on Thursday that all but 100 of the soldiers remaining in the country would leave by the end of April.
There were 2,800 US troops in West Africa at the height of the epidemic, but about 1,500 have already left the region.
Mr Obama said about 10,000 "civilian responders" would stay in West Africa to fight the virus.
'Huge suspicion'
n a statement released on Thursday, the president of the Guinean Red Cross, Youssouf Traore, said Ebola would not be stopped until people change their perceptions of the disease.
"Acts of violence committed against [volunteers] are completely unacceptable," he added.
The attacks against the group's workers ranged from verbal abuse to physical confrontations, the ICRC reported.
There is still a huge amount of suspicion among some West Africans surrounding the virus.

Myanmar clashes with rebels 'kill 47 soldiers'

Myanmar soldiers take part in a military parade marking the 65th Armed Forces Day in Nay Pyi Daw on 27 March 2010
Troops had been involved in at least 13 clashes with rebels, a newspaper said
Nearly 50 soldiers have been killed in a week of fighting between government troops and Kokang ethnic rebels in Myanmar, state media report.
The Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper said air strikes had been used in the response to the flare-up in Shan state, near the Chinese border.
The BBC's Myanmar correspondent, Jonah Fisher, says it is the heaviest fighting in at least two years.
It comes as the government tries to sign a peace deal with rebel groups.
There are reports that thousands of people have been leaving the area to escape the fighting.
China said on Tuesday that some people had crossed over into its southern Yunnan province, and that they were being looked after.
The newspaper said there had been at least 13 separate clashes in the area in recent days with the Kokang rebels, known as the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA).
Rebels attacked army bases close to Laukai, capital of the Kokang area of Shan state, it said. At least 47 soldiers were killed and more than 70 injured.
The report did not indicate any rebel casualty figures, but the Irrawaddy newspaper, based in Thailand, quoted the general secretary of MNDAA as saying two rebels had died and one was injured.
Htun Myat Lin said up to 10,000 people had fled as the military carried out air strikes using jets and helicopters.
Myanmar has been trying for decades to contain conflicts involving ethnic rebel movements seeking greater autonomy, largely in Shan and Kachin states.

The two Al-Jazeera staff, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohammed held in Egypt have been released by an Egyptian court on Thursday, February 12, 2015 on the first day of their retrial after spending over a year in prison.
In the ruling Fahmy, who is a Canadian citizen was ordered to pay a bail of 250,000 Egyptian pounds ($33,000) while Mohammed, who is an Egyptian was set free on his own  recognisance along with other defendants as the case was adjourned to Monday, February 23, 2015.
The pair, along with colleague Peter Greste – who was recently acquitted  – were arrested for allegedly supporting the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and slammed with jail sentences ranging from seven to ten years each.
Fahmy had renounced his Egyptian citizenship so as to benefit from a law which allows foreign defendants to be deported, an option which facilitated Greste’s release.
When Fahmy was allowed out of the caged dock to address the judge, he said: “I didn’t ask to drop my (Egyptian) nationality. A security official visited me and asked I drop my citizenship because the state wanted to get this case done with, it had become a nightmare.” before pulling out an Egyptian flag.

LASU Matriculates 3,143 Students

LASU Matriculates 3,143 Students
File
Prof. John Obafunwa, Vice-Chancellor (VC), Lagos State University (LASU), has urged parents and well-meaning Nigerians to donate towards boosting the image of the institution as one of the best in the world.
Obafunwa made the appeal on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at the matriculation of the 3,143 2014/2015 newly admitted students of the university.
“The institution would thankfully accept donations of buildings and equipment from parents, guardians and well-meaning Nigerians, as part of efforts to make LASU one of the best in the world,’’ he said.
Obafunwa solicited for the co-operation of parents and guardians in joining the LASU Parents’ Forum to participate in moulding the character of the students to become responsible fellows in the future.
According to Obafunwa, the joy of the matriculation would be short-lived if the students are unable to complete their programmes due to academic deficiencies.
“Parents and guardians are therefore implored to join hands with the university in nurturing the minds of these freshmen for a brilliant, better and rewarding future.
“As the future of this nation depends on them,’’ the VC said. He warned the new students to steer clear of cult related activities, as the penalty for cultism was expulsion.
“Cultism is evil and those who participate in it are not only wrecking themselves but the society,’’ he warned.
Obafunwa stated that 3,143 students were cleared for the matriculation out of the 4,166 candidates that were offered admission for the 2014/2015 academic session.
“The breakdown is as follows: Faculty of Arts – 473, Faculty of Management Science – 717, Faculty of Social Science – 478, Faculty of Science – 567, Faculty of Education – 474, School of Communication – 107.
“College of Medicine (Physiology inclusive) – 102, Faculty of Engineering – 181 and Faculty of Transport – 44,’’ he said.
The VC said the matriculating students were selected through a largely merit-driven admission process and had been issued matriculation numbers after payment of their fees.
“The 2014/2015 admission exercise was transparent and based on merit.
“The Lagos State Government has been magnanimous in reducing the school fees to N25,000 in order to allow more students intake,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that LASU had matriculated 1,119 in the 2013/2014 academic session when the tuition fee was between N198,000 for Faculty of Arts and N350,000 for the College of Medicine.

Mediterranean sinking kills 200 migrants bound for Europe

Migrants arrive in Lampedusa on 09 February 2015 after being rescued by Italian Coastguard from the Mediterranean Sea between Libya and Italy
African migrants regularly attempt the dangerous crossing to Europe
More than 200 migrants are dead after the motorboats they were travelling on sank in the Mediterranean Sea, the UN's refugee agency says.
"Nine were saved after four days at sea. The other 203 were swallowed by the waves," UNHCR's spokeswoman in Italy, Carlotta Sami, said on Twitter.
She called the situation a "horrible and enormous tragedy".
On Monday, at least 29 migrants died after the inflatable boat carrying them overturned in high seas.
Seven were already dead when they were picked up near the Italian island of Lampedusa, and a further 22 succumbed to hypothermia after spending more than 18 hours on the open deck of the vessel which picked them up.
The International Organization for Migration says the two boats involved in the latest tragedy to befall migrants bound for Europe crossing the Mediterranean Sea had departed from the Libyan coast on Saturday.
The IOM says that each boat was carrying more than 100 people when they capsized, probably on Monday.
The nine survivors all speak French, and are believed to be from West Africa.

Ukraine conflict: Death toll rises ahead of peace talks

Bus station in Donetsk (11 Feb)
At least two people were killed when a Donetsk bus station was shelled
More than 20 people have died in violence in eastern Ukraine as the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany prepare for peace talks.
Nineteen Ukrainian soldiers have been killed, many of them in a town which pro-Russian rebels say they have surrounded.
Five people were reported killed by shelling in rebel-held Donetsk.
Negotiators in Belarus are still trying to narrow differences ahead of Wednesday's planned peace summit.
Ukraine and the West accuse Russia of sending troops and arms to support the rebels, but Russia denies this.
The summit in the Belarusian capital Minsk is expected to focus on securing a ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons, as well as the creation of a demilitarised zone.
Territorial gains
More than 5,400 people have died since the conflict began. Civilian casualties have risen in recent weeks, with 263 civilians killed in populated areas between 31 January and 5 February.
With both sides seeking territorial gains before a potential ceasefire, there are fears that the violence could undermine attempts to secure a long-term deal.
The majority of Ukrainian military casualties were near Debaltseve, a major transport hub where thousands of soldiers are under rebel siege.

Bobbi Kristina’s Partner, Nick Gordon Explains The Bruises Found On Her Body

Bobbi Kristina’s Partner, Nick Gordon Explains The Bruises Found On Her Body

As Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter of Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston, lies unresponsive at Emroy University Hospital in Atlanta, Police are coming up with a logical explanation to how she ended up unconscious in a bath tub filled with water at her house Georgia on Saturday, January 31, 2015.
As earlier reported, police had opened a criminal investigation and Bobbi Kristina's partner, Nick Gordon, was the primary target.
This investigation was triggered after Bobbi Kristina had several suspicious injuries on her chest, and her mouth when she first arrived at the hospital.
However, Nick Gordan has denied all allegations, saying that Brown’s bruises were caused by Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when he tried to save her after she was found in the bathtub.
Police are still wary about his explainations as they feel that does not justify the bruises found on her face and mouth considering Gordon’s history of domestic violence.

Nigeria's Boko Haram 'kidnaps 20' in Cameroon bus hijacking

Nigerian soldiers patrol with a armoured vehicle in the city of Abuja, Nigeria, Saturday, 7 Feb, 2015
Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin have agreed to establish a joint force to combat Boko Haram
Suspected militants from Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram have hijacked a bus in northern Cameroon, abducting at least 20 people, residents say.
Militants reportedly seized a bus carrying market-goers and drove it toward the border with Nigeria.
Some reports put the total number kidnapped in Cameroon as high as 30.
Boko Haram has escalated its attacks outside Nigeria in recent weeks, targeting neighbouring Cameroon and Niger.
The insurgency has forced a postponement of Nigeria's presidential and parliamentary elections from 14 February to 28 March.
The bus was seized near the border area of Koza and driven towards the Nigerian border 18km (11 miles) away, a resident told the Associated Press news agency.
Prison attacked
In an apparently related incident, several Boko Haram fighters were killed and around 10 Cameroonian soldiers injured as the militants attacked Kerawa.
A separate group of fighters reportedly attacked the nearby town of Kolofata, looting food and livestock.
The attacks in Cameroon follow a series of assaults on the border towns of Bosso and Diffa in Niger.
Boko Haram militants targeted a prison in Diffa on Monday but were repelled by soldiers from Niger and Chad.
Diffa was also targeted by a car bomb which exploded near a market, news agencies reported, citing residents and military sources. A local journalist in Diffa said he counted one dead and 15 injured.
Niger's parliament is due to vote on Monday on contributing 700 troops to a regional force battling to regain territory from Boko Haram ahead of Nigeria's rescheduled elections.
Abbo Moro, Nigeria's interior minister, said he believes the fight against the militant group will be successful enough for the elections to go ahead.
Elections for state governors and assemblies slated for 28 February have also been moved to 11 April.

A 64-year-old man who was jailed for 25 years after he killed his wife may likely spend the rest of his life behind the bars for murdering his new girlfriend shortly after he was released from prison because he wanted to ‘go back inside’.
Brutal Stanislaw Chmielewski, was re-arrested and during a police interrogation, the pensioner disclosed that he had been struggling to survive after he left prison in Gdansk, a city on Poland’s Baltic coast.
Just as his first name sounds, Chmielewski brutally used a hammer to batter a 25-year-old female office worker introduced to him via an online dating site which he joined shortly after he was released.
Police spokesman Jurek Wysocki said, “The suspect called the emergency services and said he had just murdered someone.”
“When officers arrived they found the body of a 25-year-old woman lying on the kitchen floor. The man confessed to killing her and to planning how to do it.
“His reason, he said, was that he wanted to go back to jail because he had money problems and life was easier in jail than it was living on the outside. He was arrested and taken into custody.”
According to reports , when officers told Chmielewski he would probably spend the rest of his life in prison, his told them: “That suits me just fine.”
He added, “Life out here is nastier and more dangerous than anything you can see in jail. I’m sorry for the girl, but I’m looking forward to three meals a day and a warm bed.”

Fans used fireworks to set vehicles on fire after the clashes
The Egyptian authorities have suspended football league matches indefinitely after clashes at a stadium in Cairo left at least 22 people dead.
People were crushed after police fired tear gas at supporters of Zamalek who were trying to force their way in for a match against city rivals ENPPI.
The fans blamed the authorities for opening only a single gate.
An arrest warrant has been issued for the leaders of the Zamalek supporters group, the White Knights.
The last time the league was suspended was in 2012 after 74 fans died in rioting at a game in Port Said.
At least 20 people were also injured in Cairo on Sunday at the Air Defense Stadium, witnesses say.
Despite the violence, the match went ahead.
Hard-core Egyptian football fans are often deeply politicised and played a role in the overthrow of former President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

The WHO stated on Friday, February 6, that 9,004 people had died from the disease while 22,525 confirmed cases had been recorded.

The death toll for the current Ebola outbreak has now risen above 9,000, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.
The WHO stated on Friday, February 6, that 9,004 people had died from the disease while 22,525 confirmed cases had been recorded.
The latest numbers reveal the impact of the outbreak on the worst affected countries; Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
This comes as experts recorded a new rise in cases of the disease after a series of unsafe burials.
Infected corpses are highly contagious and unsafe burials are a major mode of transmission.
The Ebola outbreak has been on the decline and is expected to fizzle out completely by June 2015.

Ath Bilbao 2 - 5 Barcelona

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi inspired Barcelona as they moved within a point of La Liga leaders Real Madrid after winning a breathless encounter at Athletic Bilbao.
Messi's deflected free-kick, and a precise finish into the bottom corner from Luis Suarez put Barca in control.
Athletic's Mikel Rico stroked in after half-time, before Oscar De Marcos's own goal and Neymar put Barca 4-1 up.
Home striker Aritz Aduriz hit a fourth goal in seven minutes for 4-2, then Barca's Pedro tapped in a late fifth.
After opening the scoring, Argentina captain Messi turned provider to help create each of Barcelona's other four goals.
Neymar could have added a sixth, shooting straight at Athletic keeper Gorka Iraizoz when clean through, as Barca showed little mercy on a home side reduced to 10 men for the final 15 minutes.
Athletic defender Xabier Etxeita was sent off for a crude challenge on former Liverpool forward Suarez.
But, even with 11 men, the home side did not look capable of preventing a comfortable win for the visitors.
Barcelona were accused of being in "crises" a month ago as speculation about Messi's future and political in-fighting at boardroom level followed a surprise defeat at David Moyes' Real Sociedad.
Coach Luis Enrique's position also came under scrutiny as that insipid performance saw Barca trail arch-rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish title race.

Despite all these, her families, from her mothers side and fathers side, members are already fighting over her funeral plans.
This was triggered shortly after Brown was admitted to the hospital, a blockage was set up around her room and only family members with a passcode were allowed in.
According to reports, the passcode was never given to the Brown family.
The Browns are said to be “ready for war” over what the Houstons did to Bobby Brown during Whitney Houston’s funeral in 2012. During that time, Brown was stopped by security men to sit beside his daughter, Ms Brown.
Meanwhile, criminal investigations are ongoing with Nick Gordon, Brown’s partner being a primary suspect.
