Pregnant Woman Commits Suicide In Edo

A middle-aged woman in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, Ometere Aduga, has reportedly committed suicide.

The mother of two, who was said to be pregnant, was said to have committed the act by hanging herself with a rope she fastened to a ceiling fan.

Her unclad body was reportedly discovered in her apartment hours after she did not come out of bathroom, where she said she was going.

A neighbour said the victim had, a few days ago, visited a private hospital, where she was said to have told the hospital personnel of her intention to commit suicide because of a pregnancy she was carrying.
She was said to have been counselled against the act and told to report back on Monday for medical examination and counselling.

“Ometere was a very brilliant girl who was a 300- level medical student at the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, before she withdrew due to health reasons. She also had some mental disorder but later recovered and married. Her husband is not from here, so she has been staying with her parents,” a family friend said.

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Hilary Udoh, confirmed the incident, saying, “yes, it is true and the parents said they have taken it in good faith.”

1,000,000 Iraqis have fled their homes as ISIS continues armed siege

More than a million Iraqis have been forced from their homes by conflict this year, the U.N. refugee agency said Friday -- a number only likely to rise as Islamist militants and Iraqi security forces battle for control.

A humanitarian crisis is brewing, as families who've fled fighting with little more than the clothes on their back seek water, food and shelter from the summer heat.

Concern for the soaring number of people displaced in Iraq comes as the UNHCR marks World Refugee Day on Friday.  Its report, based on data up to the end of 2013, finds that the number of refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced people worldwide has, for the first time since World War II, exceeded 50 million people.

Now the crisis in Iraq -- which was already sheltering hundreds of thousands displaced by the war in Syria -- is swelling that number even further.

An estimated 500,000 people fled Iraq's second city, Mosul, last week after it fell to fighters from the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

The state police boss said that all the recovered cows were currently under the custody of the command, adding that, “my men will not relent in their efforts to making the state crime free.”

He explained that the 24-hour patrol currently going on in all parts of the state would continue until crime was completely wiped out in the state.

Ohaneze Ndigbo Youth Council [OYC] has berated the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) over the latter’s criticism of South East Governors on the arrest last Sunday, of 486 suspected insurgents in Abia section of the Enugu-Port Harcourt express road by soldiers.

AYCF President, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, it would be recalled, cautioned governors of the region agsint the indiscriminate arrest of northerners in the South-East, saying that the people arrested were travelers and not Boko Haram insurgents.

Reacting to the position of AYCF, Ohaneze Youth Council warned their northern counterparts to “stop politicizing the security problem in the country”, and reminded AYCF that the 486 suspects were arrested by the nation’s security operatives not South East governors.

The South East governors, who visited the presidential villa, Abuja, where they held a closed-door meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday, assured him of their unflinching support in the fight against terrorism even as they declared that the region would remain impregnable to Boko Haram infiltration.

They spoke on the backdrop of the discovery of three deadly Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, planted in the auditorium and parking space of Living Faith Church aka Winners Chapel, Owerri, Imo State.

Lagos Alerts Residents To More Rainfall, Calls For Calm

rainfall

Residents of the nation’s commercial nerve centre – Lagos State – have been alerted to coming downpours which will be accompanied with occasional thunderstorm.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, who gave the alert in a statement on Sunday, added that there would also be occasional flash flood on some roads around the state.

He, however, advised residents not to panic, saying it was normal to have pools of water on the road whenever it rained consistently in a city like Lagos.

Mr. Bello also advised residents to stay off the roads if they do not have serious cause to go out in order not to be caught in a gridlock.

Bello said, “Whenever it rains heavily across the state, there is a rise in the Lagoon and ocean, which automatically locks up all the canals in the state. When the water in the ocean and Lagoon recedes, our canals will discharge into these water bodies.

“The after effect is that it takes a long time before water discharges into the Lagoon as well as the time it eliminates all backflows.

“However, it is pertinent to explain that water on the road after continuous rainfall is not flooding, but flash flood, which will definitely disappear in a matter of time because our canals are already functional.

“Lagosians are advised not to panic, but go about their business activities as our canals are regularly cleaned and maintained to contain storm water generated during the rains.

“But we advise our people, if possible, to stay off the roads when they don’t have a very serious cause to do so, in order not to be caught in the after-rain gridlock”.

World Naked Bike Ride Generates Controvesy

Portland is a city that celebrates the unusual and the bizarre, but apparently not the unclothed.
On June 8, the city hosts the World Naked Bike Ride starting at 10 p.m., where, as the name states, bikers ride the streets wearing nothing but helmets and shoes.
Rides will take place in more than 74 cities in 17 different countries, but Portland organizers hope to get more than 8,000 naked people to participate.
It's all in the name of protesting against the oil-based economy and the vulnerability cyclists face on the road, according to the event website.
The butt-baring bike ride is arousing strong reactions from Portland locals like Cathy Goertz, who hasn’t been a fan of past naked protests in the city. She called police last year after she and her husband, Joe, were stuck between a bevy of nude commuters near the downtown waterfront.
This year’s ride is starting in her neighborhood, and she’s trying to call attention to possible problems.

A Florida couple face more than 90 charges after police say they severely neglected a slew of animals on their farm in Lakeland, Florida. One emaciated horse died while a vet was tried saving it.
Jacob Caudy, 28, and Emily Cowper, 24, were arrested on Monday, according to a news release from Polk County Sheriff’s Office, that accused them of depriving food from horses and other animals in their care.
